Why Saving Species Matters: How protecting species and ecosystems around the world affects our health, our pocketbooks, and the kind of world we leave for our children.

Join us for a discussion about the rapid loss of species and ecosystems like rainforests and coral reefs around the world. Learn what we can do to help halt species loss and work toward the conservation of natural resources. Find out about life-saving medicines derived from natural compounds that are used to treat cancer and other diseases. Learn about ongoing efforts to protect our most threatened ecosystems and promote sustainable development, and how the United States can be a leader in international sustainable development.
Panelists will include:
- Dr.Thomas E.Lovejoy - chief biodiversity adviser to the president of the World Bank, senior adviser to the president of the United Nations Foundation, and Biodiversity Chair of the Heinz Center for Science, Economics, and the Environment.
- Samuel C. Blackman, MD, PhD - pediatric oncologist and Associate Director of Experimental Medicine/Oncology at Merck Research Laboratories.
- Jeff Wise - Director of the Alliance for Global Conservation, Director of the Pew Environment Group's Global Conservation Initiative.
- Dr. Kent Hughes Butts - Professor of Political Military Strategy and the Director of the National Security Issues Group at the Center for Strategic Leadership, U.S. Army War College
David Velinsky, PhD - Vice President of the Academy of Natural Sciences and Director of the Patrick Center for Environmental Research will moderate the discussion.

The goals of the Center for Environmental Policy (CEP) at The Academy of Natural Sciences are to evaluate key issues of environmental policy, facilitate dialogues and decision-making on environmental topics, and inform the public from both an academic as well as practical perspective. The CEP will answer the need for a non-partisan, science-based organization that is capable of accessing and guiding a myriad of public and private stakeholders.
